It’s just about engagement season folks. You know, that time of year between Thanksgiving and New Years where it seems like everyone is changing their relationship status to “engaged” (or worse, they’re posting embarrassing statuses like “he liked it so he put a ring on it!”…). Shortly after the big question is popped, the second big question is often not far behind and it may involve you. Your newly betrothed friend will soon be popping a question of her own to her gals, and if you say yes, some bachelorette party coordination is likely in your future. Luckily, our area offers some great options for local fun that won’t break the bank. Whether you spend the day, night or long weekend, Newport, RI is the perfect setting for all “last sail before the veil”/”last fling before the ring” festivities.
The City By The Sea offers numerous bachelorette activities and even those with the most discerning tastes can find something to love about this city. Depending on the season you visit, options can include sailing, comedy shows, beaches, historic tours, sightseeing and of course, bars and restaurants aplenty. For an afternoon at sea or a sunset excursion, check out 12 Meter Charters (runs approximately May – Oct depending on weather). If you’ll be visiting in the offseason, the Bit Players offer a hilarious night of improv comedy with an always-appealing BYOB option. Bachelorette parties are always welcome and often find themselves a part of the show themselves.
If history and scenery is more your thing, you and your crew can visit one of the many mansions that line historic Bellevue Avenue, take a drive down famous Ocean Drive or take a walk along the always breathtaking Cliff Walk, which believe it or not is just as beautiful in winter as it is in summer (think white capped waves and snow covered beaches below). Warm up (or cool down) with a beverage at the luxe Chanler at Cliff Walk either outside around a fire pit or inside their cozy bar.
Like wine tasting? The Newport area is home to three vineyards and several others are a short car ride away. The newly remodeled Newport Vineyards features an indoor tasting room, a farmers market, a cafe and live music on select days and also shares a home with Brix Restaurant. Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth offers live jazz on Sunday afternoons in the summer and Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards is a unique coastal vineyard with its own cafe and plenty of funky hand-carved chairs on the lawn in the warmer months.
And finally, make sure you sample the tasty local fare and creative libations this seaside town has to offer. You can’t go wrong with Mexican and margaritas at Diego’s, a classy dinner at the Clarke Cookhouse or a fun casual meal at the Brick Alley Pub. For cocktails, visit the adirondack chairs at Castle Hill Inn for postcard perfect sunsets, the outdoor bar at the Black Pearl for a classic Newport scene or O’Brien’s Pub for pool, a juke box and karaoke. For live music and dancing, check out SpeakEasy, Newport Blues Cafe and The Pelham, or in the summer months, Dockside, The Landing and Lobster Bar.
