Yvonne & Kevin Heerema

Kevin was struck by her beauty and friendliness; Yvonne by his blue eyes and muscular arms. After an NYC sushi date and jazz club outing, the pair began dating, and eventually, moved to Texas together for work. Outdoor nature lovers at heart, Yvonne and Kevin were known to travel, and a Costa Rican getaway was pivotal for a proposal. Of course the bride gave a resounding “Yes!” and destination wedding planning was soon underway.

“While we dated we made many trips to the Green Mountains of Vermont,” says Yvonne. “We always wanted a small, intimate, casual but elegant wedding surrounded by nature.”

Marrying in a church was most important to both Yvonne and Kevin and once that was decided, it was fitting that across the street from where they wed, they opted for an intimate reception venue at the Pond’s Pavilion at the Equinox Resort & Spa. With a comfortable guest limit of 75, it provided the setting the couple desired and was truly significant of Vermont as a destination.

With the help of wedding planner Carrie MacMillan Lane of Storied Events, the couple was able to incorporate all the details they could dream of into a beautiful weekend awash in wedding activities. “Yvonne and Kevin really wanted to create a wedding weekend which involved their passions and love for family,” says Carrie. Details followed a travel theme – they used compasses as escort cards, vintage postcards and luggage for their guest book, table numbers of countries they’ve visited and desserts depictive of their Dutch and Mexican heritages.

As photographer Carla Ten Eyck describes it, the wedding was a “feast for the eyes,” and no detail left unattended.  Thursday offered guests a welcome cocktail reception; Friday was a bus tour of Vermont and a rehearsal dinner in the middle of a birch forest; and the day-after was a farewell brunch. Welcome bags with locally-made Vermont goods greeted guests at arrival.

“It wasn’t just memories of one day and memories of just us,” says Yvonne, “but memories from an entire weekend and of a beautiful city and state that they [guests] have now fallen in love with too! We wanted to create a special place that we can come back to and relive the weekend over again.”
