KATHRYN SAFFORD TO ADAM JOHNSON | 8.21.15By Laurie Celine Balliett
When University of Rhode Island students Kathryn (Kate) Safford and Adam Johnson stepped into the same elevator on the first day of classes, they were hunting for the same sociology room. They sat next to each other that day and it didn’t take long for them to realize that they were also searching for each other. They both love the outdoors, hiking and nature, and both earned degrees in sociology. After graduation, they each shifted to the business field.
Kathryn creates humorous greeting cards, “Cards by Kate,” and Adam had asked her to design a card with a detailed itinerary for an upcoming weekend getaway to New Hampshire. When they hiked a trail to a waterfall, he got down on one knee and handed her the card she had made. She opened it to find “get engaged” written inside and a ring tied to the card. That was two years before the wedding. During the long engagement, Kate crafted the decorations and favors for their big day.
“We wanted everyone to feel relaxed. It’s just about nature and love,” says Kate of why they chose to marry and have their reception at Bittersweet Farm in Westport, Mass. The bride and groom both wanted a rustic, outdoor venue. “It was perfect. The barn was beautiful; the food was so nice. It was a one-stop shop,” she says.
The couple’s sense of humor rings through their love story: in tales of laughter about nearly losing the ring on the hike, of swollen fingers during moments of placing the rings on each other’s hands and with their party favors of fake mustaches and silly glasses.
Adam surprised his new bride with a mystery honeymoon in Boston, since traveling far was not possible due to Kate beginning studies for her MBA degree.
“It was very brave of Adam, because he gets nervous when there aren’t a lot of trees around,” she laughs.
