Travel Tuesday: Last Minute Labor Day Ideas

If you don’t have any plans for Labor Day weekend, don’t fret, we’ve got a couple last minute ideas that are an easy drive from anywhere in Southern New England.

It’s often these last sunny days of summer when I realize just how lucky I am to live in coastal New England. While most people are dying to plan a visit up this way, I am already here, and just a short jaunt away from so many great spots. Here are two suggestions for lovely nearby escapes. Depending on where you live, they could work for a day trip – no hotel reservations required!

Narragansett, RI

Newport may get all the glory in little Rhody, but Narragansett is a pretty amazing spot to visit too. From the iconic towers and newly renovated Coast Guard House, to the laid back surf-vibes of the Pier neighborhood shops and restaurants, this is a great place for a low key beach day and some good eats. There are clam shacks galore including Aunt Carrie’s and Iggy’s, delicious specialty burgers and juices at Crazy Burger and outdoor dining directly across from the Atlantic Ocean at Trio. Looking to stay over night? Check out The Anchor Motel or the Tower House B&B.

Gloucester, MA

The place where George Clooney’s doomed trip began in The Perfect Storm, this quaint fishing town offers much to do and see. It’s home to some of the best beaches north of Boston, including Good Harbor Beach. This Labor Day weekend also happens to be the 30th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival so it will be a particularly bustling but fun few days in town. If you’re a beer lover or towing your man along, make sure to stop by Cape Ann Brewing for a free tour and a tasty cold one.
