The Registry at Bloomingdale’s is an iconic resource. From high-end brands, must-have home essentials and unique decorative accessories, The Registry provides everything newlyweds need to outfit their home and lifestyle as a party of two. Kathy McTigue, director of The Registry at Bloomingdale’s, speaks about the registry experience, right down to the process and the perks.
SNEW: How would you define ‘modern entertaining’? What type of lifestyle, product and setting might you associate this with?
KM: When it comes to modern entertaining, there really is no standard approach, as it means something different to everyone. One popular approach to modern entertaining that we often see at Bloomingdale’s is that couples are entertaining more in their home. When doing so, they like to recreate their favorite experience at home, whether it be their favorite restaurant, lounge or even sports bar! Modern entertaining often includes mixing high and low, just as you do with the fashion in your wardrobe. For example, pairing a crystal wine decanter with less expensive wine glasses.
SNEW: When couples walk into Bloomingdale’s to register for their home with entertaining guests in mind, what is the first thing you do to assist them? In what direction might you steer them first?
KM: When registrants come to Bloomingdale’s, we want them to relax, take their time and have FUN! After they meet with their Registry Consultant, he or she will then personally guide them in the right direction based on their needs and lifestyle. Registering isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ process; we work with each registrant to make their registry a reflection of who they are.
SNEW: What is the registry process like, from selecting particular items, updating and organizing a registry online and taking advantage of post-wedding perks?
KM: Many couples start the process online and then make an appointment to come into the store to finish their registry and to meet with a Registry Consultant for expert advice and guidance. After that they access their registry either in-store or online via the Brown Bag app. An in-store bar code scanner allows registrants to walk into any Bloomingdale’s location and add items to their registry by scanning ANY barcode directly from their phone! Couples also love to share their registry via their social media channels.
SNEW: Why is registering for those special ‘conversation pieces’ so important?
KM: In many cases, the registrants are setting up their first home. Therefore, the items they register for should be a reflection of them and speak to who they are. As for a conversation piece, it can be whatever they want to say – fun, serious, formal, playful – the choices are endless!
SNEW: What is a registry item that every couple should have in their home?
KM: Our registry consultants work with every couple to decide, based on their lifestyle, what their ‘must-have’ item should be. Regardless, I always recommend that every couple should have beautiful china!
SNEW: When registering for the home, the items couples select are more than just things. They are longlasting, family pieces. When it comes to modern style, how do couples select items that will stand the test of time and adapt to their growing family?
KM: Pick something you love! It’s like buying a piece of artwork – you don’t buy it for the value down the road, you buy it because you like looking at it.
