From the very first day they met to the day of their wedding, family ties have always been the guiding force in Marissa and Peter’s relationship. It all started when, in an attempt to spend more time with her sister, who was soon moving, Marissa joined her brother-in-law’s intramural soccer team. Although she is not a soccer player, Marissa says her sister convinced her to join so she would get to see her every week. It was there that she first met Peter, who not only worked with her brother-in-law, Mike, but also played on the team. After a couple of games, Peter asked Marissa out. Manhattan provided the backdrop for the initial meeting but it was Newport, Rhode Island, that served as the perfect setting for the pair’s “I do’s.”
Marissa’s mom is from Rhode Island, and she suggested Marissa and Peter get married there. Although Marissa didn’t live in Rhode Island, the memories of having always visited as a child to enjoy the company of her relatives certainly made it a very special place. Of course, after being dubbed the “Rhode Island baby” by her beloved grandmother, it only seemed fitting that she, unlike her three older siblings who all got married on Long Island, should be married in the Ocean State.
St. Mary’s Church in Cranston was an obvious choice for their vintage-inspired ceremony, having been both the site of Marissa’s baptism and her parents’ own wedding 40 years earlier. Marissa says she’ll never forget the moment when she and Peter were kneeling next to each other for the remainder of the mass in church, after having said their vows and realizing they were finally married.
After having dutifully practiced their first dance, Marissa and Peter finally got to put their skills to the test as they danced in the presence of all of their family and friends at their OceanCliff reception. “Once we were finally out there,” says Marissa, “on the actual day, doing it for real, it was really an ethereal moment of pure joy.”
