Kate & Mike

What began as an ordinary introduction in 2013 led to an extraordinary marriage proposal and union between Kate Beiser and Mike Connolly.
“We met in a bar on a random Tuesday night—the old school way!” says Kate. This was in Kate’s native city of Atlanta (Mike is originally from Waltham, Massachusetts), and they relocated together to Washington D.C. in April 2015. In the same fashion as the day they met, Mike popped the question to Kate on a “random Sunday evening” in December on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial amid a display of twinkling Christmas lights.
“He completely caught me off guard,” remembers Kate. “I was hoping it would happen in D.C.—it was the city we came to together and it was a new territory for both of us.”
Soon after the proposal, the couple began planning a spectacular seaside destination wedding in Westport, Massachusetts. “My parents have a home there … it has always been such a special place for me,” says Kate. “It was really cool to introduce [Mike] to it and have him love it as much as me.”
To help make Kate’s wedding dreams a reality, the bride-to-be enlisted wedding planner Jaime Nelson of Eventfully Planned. “She was amazing,” says Kate of Jaime, who, despite having less than a year to plan the event, fulfilled Kate’s specific vision of a “rustic-glam” wedding.
Not wanting to overwhelm the surroundings with clashing décor, Kate kept it simple with a tented reception filled with rustic farm tables and a color palette of white and pink. The couple was married beneath a cascading floral arbor overlooking the ocean at Kate’s parents’ home and hosted their reception at a neighboring property—the same location where Kate’s parents and cousin were wed.
Forgoing a first look, the couple instead extended the cocktail hour and, on a whim, headed to Baker’s Beach and F.L. Tripp & Sons marina to take photos. “The pictures were amazing,” says Kate. “But also to have that time alone—it was so nice to just soak in the magnitude of what happened. It was a great way to start the night.”
For Mike, the anticipation of seeing his bride surrounded by family and friends stands out as a particularly profound moment. “When I first saw her walking down the aisle … that was my favorite moment of the day.”
