Weddings seem to be the perfect place for fairytale encounters. This was true for Garrett Cobb and Brian Safchik, who met as a bridesmaid and a groomsman in the wedding of mutual friends. The pair immediately hit it off and became a couple. Brian asked Garrett to marry him on her birthday, May 9, 2015 while on a hike in upstate New York’s Mohonk Reserve.

“I was expecting a sterling silver and mother of pearl ring that I had requested (and didn’t really want),” recalls Garrett, “and he pulled out an engagement ring … I was completely blown away.”

The couple wanted the wedding to be a vibrant and easy expression of their love for each other and their families. Their wedding theme combined nautical elements with Great Gatsby glam with the men in pale blue seersucker suits, bridesmaids dressed in sea glass hues, and, appropriately, plenty of ostrich feathers. Their ceremony and reception, which took place at The Stone House Inn, was a milestone for the couple.

“Because there were times that happiness never even seemed possible, this was extremely momentous for us and our families and our children,” says Garrett.

Garrett worked with her sister, wedding planner Galen Cobb-Limoges, to design a day that exemplified “easy, breezy and beautiful.” Garrett was most excited to include her own son and her other son with Brian in the wedding day. “The whole thing exceeded all of my expectations—it was perfection! We were both so grateful to have everyone there,” says the new bride, “knowing we were finally happy and thriving with our children and being happy for us.”
