Now this is news you can use. World-famous designer Michael Aram – responsible for one of the most popular designer lines on The Registry at Bloomingdale’s – is visiting the Bloomingdale’s Home Store in The Mall at Chestnut Hill this Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to view his exquisite pieces for the home, preview his Palace Collection, experience his jewelry – and most importantly to have your purchase signed and personalized by Aram himself. In preparation for the big event, we tasked him with the following questions about his design process and love of metal…his answers only make us covet his creations even more!
SNEW: What is your favorite thing about working with metal and/or infusing your designs for the home with this tactile medium?
MA: There is an enduring quality to metal that makes it thrilling as a medium. The fact that the material is so fluid, but then hardens and is basically indestructible once cooled – essentially capturing a moment in time for eternity.
SNEW: Your creations are one of The Registry at Bloomingdale’s most popular items – why do you think people (and specifically engaged couples!) are so drawn to your collections?
MA: I think couples are drawn to the handmade quality, originality and functionality of my work.
SNEW: I see a lot of natural forms in your designs – orchids, palm fronds, leaves, vines. Is nature a continual inspiration for you?
MA: Nature and organic shapes mixed with the handmade process are the core of my work and continually feed my creative process.
SNEW: When you develop a product line for the home, are you drawn to creating practical items for everyday use or special occasion standouts?
MA: I think that today, the distinctions between “everyday” and “special occasion” are blurred. We want beautiful, functional pieces that elevate the everyday and that can be used and enjoyed always.
SNEW: Most importantly, are you looking forward to Friday?
MA: Yes, I love getting out to the stores and meeting my customers. It is always very fun and inspirational for me.
