Newport Wedding Décor, Black-and-White Theme Inspired By 1920s

KRISTEN AUCOIN TO CHRISTOFFER LARSEN | 6.6.15

On a chilly evening in November 2013, Kristen (Krissy) Aucoin was rushing her boyfriend, Christoffer Larsen, as they headed to dinner in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. “I was trying to run because I was cold,” says Krissy. “We came to a pretty square with a lit fountain and when I turned to ask him to hurry, he was getting down on his knee.” As Chris proposed, a photographer friend emerged from a hiding spot as planned, commemorating the moment. The couple then joined both sets of parents at a restaurant and toasted the future.“Chris is a great planner, but this was amazing and perfect,” says Krissy. “I was totally surprised.” What wasn’t a surprise was her choice of venue for the wedding. “I grew up in Rhode Island and had toured the Newport mansions with my family,” says Krissy. “When I was about 10 years old, we visited Rosecliff and I said, ‘I’m going to get married here.’ ” On June 6, 2015, Chris and Krissy exchanged vows and celebrated in the setting of her dreams.

“We loved the 1920s inspiration,” says Krissy. “Some of the scenes from the original The Great Gatsby were filmed here. We used touches from the Roaring Twenties, like feathers and pearls on the chairs and in the centerpieces and bridesmaids’ hairpieces. The bridesmaids wore modern, vintage beaded dresses. I found brooches to pin on the bridesmaids’ bouquets and a larger one on mine.”

Other evocative details included framed quotes from Fitzgerald’s novel and an art deco cake, topped with a “wedding couple” fashioned after the couple’s dogs, Misty and Shelby. Entering the decorated ballroom for the first time from the outdoor cocktail reception took Krissy’s breath away. “It was what I’d pictured, only 1,000 times better,” she says.

The newlyweds were also thrilled by the images Faith Dugan captured, including shots of their energetic two-year-old pups. Says Krissy: “Faith and her husband, Jefferson, were amazing. From the first meeting, I instantly felt a connection with Faith, and Chris and I knew we wanted her to be our photographer. She had great ideas for photos in between the ceremony and reception, and because she knows the area so well, she helped us plan, so everything was timed perfectly and smoothly.”
