Megan & Midhat Serbagi

Megan Freilich and Midhat Serbagi met at the University of Wisconsin, Madison when they were 19 and 22. “We became best friends and just both knew we were meant for each other,” says Megan.

In planning their wedding, the couple wanted to have a vintage feel that was also summery and playful. “It all started with a pale pink vintage 1950s dress that I fell in love with for one of the bridesmaids,” says Megan. “That was where the inspiration began. I worked off that dress to create the feel for the wedding.”

That feeling carried through when choosing the right location as well and Belle Mer in Newport, RI was an expert choice. “When we went to visit Belle Mer, we knew it was perfect,” says Megan. “It was picturesque with the boats sailing by and the bridge lit up in the background. It felt incredibly romantic. The interior was also modern and chic and allowed you to transform the space with flowers.”

Planning a destination wedding isn’t easy but the couple did a lot from New York and communicated via email. As a special touch, the groom’s mother led a string quartet for the ceremony’s music and guests took home bags of cookies as party favors tied with “Happily Ever After” ribbons made by the bride’s sister.

From the vintage bridesmaids’ dresses, to the Brooks Brothers khaki suits with Ives St. Laurent ties, to the bride’s Claire Pettibone dress from Kleinfelds and a vintage Swarovski bracelet – the wedding party wore casual, summer chic attire that complemented the fun and relaxed atmosphere the couple worked hard to create – and one that shone through in the photography as well.

Megan and Midhat didn’t want “stuffy,” formal pictures to remember their wedding by. Instead, they opted for more casual, natural shots that were fun, playful and inventive.

“Our bride and groom were an absolute dream to work with,” say photographer’s Matt and Angie Sloan of Sloan Photographers. “They both are extremely talented and creative. We instantly connected with them and they were so easy to photograph together. The wedding day was absolutely incredible and we felt like family before the night was over.”

Looking back on the big day, with cocktail hour against the backdrop of a setting sun on Newport Harbor with sailboats passing by, with everyone outside, Megan simply describes it as “kind of magical.”
