When Katie Bates and Sam Kirovsky say they saw fireworks on their wedding day, they mean figuratively and literally. While the first round of sparks flew between the pair during the ceremony behind the old stone walls of Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, later that evening the newlyweds were surprised with real-life pyrotechnics thanks to another reception’s nearby display.

“My sister made us stand in the middle of the field,” the bride remembers. “We were overlooking our tent and suddenly the sky lit up. We had no idea and that was a special moment. We joke that we had the better view.”

The fireworks were not the only awe-inspiring part of the event. The venue, with its muted, unpolished beauty, created just the atmosphere Katie and Sam envisioned for their big day. The crumbling bricks and overgrown feel were also romantic. The bride, whose profession is corporate event planning, specifically chose Fort Adams State Park for its uniqueness and the fact she could bring in her own vendors. A tent from Sperry Tents, farm-fresh food prepared by caterer Smoke and Pickles, and floral arrangements from Flowers by Semia were at the top of Katie’s “must-have” list.

“My vendors were amazing,” says Katie. “I wanted the décor to fit in with the fort’s aesthetic and look like it had just always been there.”

Her florist used mediums like zinc, worn metals and stone, keeping the arrangements loose, organic and unstructured. The French-bistro-meets-Restoration-Hardware theme was carried out further with hand-built wooden bars and whitewashed farm tables dressed with linen tablecloths and eclectic, antique silverware.

While much of the enchantment happened indoors, Mother Nature also came through for Katie, Sam and their guests. Along with the cloudless night sky for the fireworks, at one point following the ceremony the rain stopped and a rainbow appeared. “It was magical,” Katie says.
