You’re engaged! Now’s the time to step up your beauty routine. Award-winning makeup artist Amanda McCarthy reveals her favorite “big day” beauty must-haves and how to get your skin wedding-perfect.
BOOK TRIALS EARLY
Finding just the right look for your wedding can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. McCarthy’s recommendation: book early! Since hair and makeup artists tend to book months in advance, McCarthy suggests scheduling your trial as soon as you know the date of your wedding. By giving yourself plenty of time, you’ll have the option to shop around and try out different styles.
FIND A SKINCARE ROUTINE
Drinking plenty of water, exercising and the right skincare routine are key to looking beautiful on your big day. McCarthy’s recommendation: If you don’t already have one, start a skincare regimen at least six months prior to your wedding date and start having regular facials to get skin clean and prepped for wedding day makeup. “[Facials] are like tuning up a bicycle,” says McCarthy who also recommends loading up on sunscreen to prevent skin damage. “Makeup does not lie well on skin that’s been in the sun all summer,” she warns.
GET YOUR GLOW ON
Skip the damaging rays and opt for a sunless airbrush spray tan for a natural-looking glow. Make sure you go to an experienced pro and test out your tan before your big day appointment; that way you’ll know what you’ll look like in pictures. McCarthy suggests spray tanning two days before your wedding day and the night before the rehearsal dinner (tans take 8-10 hours to develop) so your bronze fades to the perfect color. Manicures should also be scheduled before tanning to prevent the tan from washing off and looking uneven.
