Professional photographer Sara Zarrella is in her element when it comes to weddings. Never more so, however, than when she and husband Steve Sheally exchanged their own vows. This time she wasn’t behind the camera lens, but Sara did tend to all other wedding details, from a welcome barbeque to post-wedding brunch.
“I’m very detail-oriented,” says Sara. “We hired vendors to help but I made or arranged everything.”
The bride’s “detail-oriented” quality translated into creative touches, including white chairs individually decorated with throw pillows, feathers and beads; family trees—actual trees adorned with photos of both families; and bottles of olive oil infused with homegrown herbs for each guest.
Sara always knew she wanted to get married at Gerald’s Farm, her parents’ property in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, which is open to the public for weddings and other events. She also knew she wanted a Mediterranean theme in homage to her Italian heritage.
“We had market lights, table wine and Mediterranean food,” says Sara. “I wore a blusher veil that my father lifted in the Italian tradition.”
Sara and Steve met while at a wedding in Florida, where Steve lived at the time. This paralleled Sara’s parents’ history; they also met in Florida where her mother, Debbi, lived and her father, Gerald, visited from Rhode Island. Since many of the guests were from Florida, it was important to the couple to have a full weekend to share with them.
“We really wanted to be able to entertain and spend time with everyone,” says Sara. “We had an authentic clambake for the rehearsal dinner so they could experience some New England flavor.”
While the entire weekend was memorable, the bride and groom shared a special moment during a sudden downpour at the reception.
“Steve and I went out and danced in the rain,” says Sara. “It was magical to be alone with him for a moment, to look back at the tent, all lit up, and think, Wow, all these people are here for us! Your wedding really is 24 hours of the most magical time of your life.”
