First impressions arent everything. When Ashley Hemond met her future husband, Brian Fox, the first thing that came to mind was total nerd.” But sooner rather than later, Brian won her over. It took several weeks, but I was able to get her to go on a date with me to a Red Sox game,” says Brian, who is pursuing his Ph.D.

In no time, the couple was joined at the hip. Ashley, a senior analyst in Boston, says it didnt take much for the academic Brian to convince her he was the one. He grew on me,” she says.

The couple knew they wanted their wedding day to embrace both their love of the ocean and the Portland, Maine, area, which served as a steadying force throughout Ashleys life. I moved around a lot growing up,” says Ashley, whose family has kept a home on Peaks Island for about 15 years. The island in general was really where home was.

Though they had already put a deposit down on another venue in Portland, Ashley and Brian knew The Inn on Peaks Island was the place for their special day once they saw it. It was kind of love at first sight,” says Ashley. It had all the elements of coastal Maine and was relaxed but still classy.

After a traditional Roman Catholic ceremony, the reception at The Inn was a chance for family and friends to let loose and enjoy perks like a pizza truck and an ice cream bar. But the evening wasnt without moments of nostalgia.

Photographer Kate Baker captured Ashley and Brian, along with both sets of parents, cutting into a three-tiered cake together. The action was in honor of both the brides and grooms parents, who were celebrating their 30th anniversaries that year. Each couple had their own flavor in the cake: coconut, French toast and chocolate peanut butter.

The cake was probably my favorite thing and the most special thing about our wedding,” says Ashley.
