Just call them “The Breakfast Club.”
For Carly and Kyle Maher, love blossomed in Saturday detention. Who would have guessed back in high school that the Ridgefield, Connecticut, natives would end up together?
“That was when we got to know each other,” says Kyle, who works in construction project management in Manhattan. “We were together for about a year, and then Carly went to college in North Carolina, and I went to Purdue. We knew the stress from a long-distance relationship would make it hard, so we decided to stay close throughout college. We always knew we could end up back together.”
And as they predicted, Carly and Kyle reunited as adults, and they wed this past August at Regatta Place in Newport. “We really wanted something on the water,” says Carly. “We went for the weekend to check it [Regatta Place] out and fell in love with the venue.”
The rest of the planning was smooth sailing for the couple, who chose a lemon cake with buttercream and strawberry frosting from Scrumptions in East Greenwich. “They wanted a simple and elegant wedding cake,” says Jennifer Miller, bridal consultant and retail manager at Scrumptions. “They were very laid back and super easy to work with.”
The only wrench thrown in their big day was pouring rain the morning of the wedding. But like clockwork, the skies cleared just in time for the ceremony, which took place under a tented dock on the Goat Island Marina, overlooking the city. And as for the cake? The couple barely had time to grab a bite before heading to the dance floor. “It was excellent,” says Kyle.
