Where would we be without our friends? They comfort us, make us laugh—and sometimes even introduce us to the loves of our lives. Life changed for Lauren Kaye and James Fortsch Jr. one weekend in May 2011, when Lauren decided to tag along with friends headed to visit James at his family’s home in Connecticut. Sparks between Lauren and James flew the instant they met. The pair maintained a long distance relationship for about a year before Lauren moved from Boston to join James in New York.

The couple loves to spend time in Carl Schurz Park near their apartment on the Upper East Side, and it was a perfect spot to enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks over the East River. With the sky bursting with light, James outdid the pyrotechnics by getting down on one knee and proposing to Lauren.

“James had invited all of our friends and family to share in our special night,” says Lauren. “It was truly magical and a night I will never forget!”

Both Lauren and James had vacationed with their families on Cape Cod, so it seemed the perfect place to host their nuptials. They chose Wychmere Beach Club, which overlooks picturesque Wychmere Harbor in Harwich Port.

“(The Cape) has always been special to us and we wanted to share our love for Cape Cod with all our friends and family,” Lauren says. “We exchanged nuptials on a beautiful summer night, officiated by our good friend. We wanted to include our friends and family in the ceremony as much as we could because they are a big part of our lives and they mean so much to us.”

The venue’s classic Cape Cod ambiance proved to be the perfect setting.

“The chandeliers, original gray dock floors, sailcloth drapes and wrap-around French doors overlooking the harbor made for an elegant night,” notes Lauren. “We wanted our décor to be simple and chic because the venue itself was so beautiful.”

The bridesmaids wore gray dresses and groomsmen navy suits, which tied in seamlessly with the location. Lauren was thrilled that her Romona Keveza strapless bridal gown had pockets.

“I wanted to wear something I would feel comfortable in and I knew would be timeless,” she says.

“One of my favorite memories was when the girls were getting ready in our suite. We were standing on our balcony as the boys were singing ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ to us. Another favorite memory was dancing the night away. We did not want it to end! Our last song was ‘Piano Man’ by Billy Joel. All of our wedding guests stood in a circle and sang along as they surrounded James and me on the dance floor. We were able to see all of our favorite people all together!”

And now, they are joyfully anticipating the arrival of a baby boy, due in October.
