Allie Herzog was waiting for the commuter train home from her job in Manhattan when a fellow passenger approached her. “He thought I looked familiar,” she says. They spent the train ride talking—only to discover that they lived three houses apart in NY. The two soon began dating, but their neighborly status ended when Frank moved back to Buffalo, his hometown, for work. Before he left, Allie took him on a Block Island getaway to introduce him to one of her favorite places, Rhode Island. “I never knew this before our rehearsal dinner,” says Allie, “but he told me that trip was when he realized our relationship was going to last.”
Their love affair with Block Island lasted as well. For their wedding, the couple—who now lives in Newport—knew it was the perfect destination to bring friends and family together. “I always wanted something beachy and coastal,” says Allie.
The couple married on the lawn of The Atlantic Inn, perched on a hill overlooking the ocean and harbor. Bridesmaid dresses in sea glass hues evoked the beach setting, as did summery bouquets and nautical touches, such as “ferry ticket” save-the-dates and sweet messages-in-a-bottle written by guests. To blend their religious backgrounds, the couple exchanged vows beneath a birchwood chuppah, creating their own sense of tradition by sealing love letters and a bottle of local wine in a “love box,” to be opened on a future anniversary.
The cocktail reception on the veranda included nods to Frank’s hometown, including mini wings and “beef on weck” sliders, two Buffalo signature bar snacks. For a taste of Rhode Island, guests enjoyed a rehearsal dinner clambake and wedding-day raw bar, as well as lobster sliders and specialty cocktails made with local blackberries. “Frank’s family had never been to Rhode Island,” says Allie. “We wanted to give them a taste of the coast.”
Above all, they wanted the day to be a relaxed celebration. “We wanted it to be fun, summertime casual, not super fancy,” says Allie. “My family got a house for the week next to the inn, and it was a nice way to extend the celebration. It goes so fast.”By Nicole Maranhas
