“Patrick and I met on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Tavern on the Water in Charlestown, MA.,” remembers bride Alethea Harney. After dating for a year-and-a-half, plus a “very long” fifteen-month engagement, the Boston-based couple chose to marry at Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, MA.
Alethea wanted to hold the reception in a tent, and the Poolside Pavilion with gleaming chandeliers worked perfectly for their summer wedding. “We visited fifteen places and the one spot that really stood out was Brewster,” says Alethea. “It’s such a charming seaside town.” The naturally beautiful setting of the Cape and the resort’s manicured lawns and various smaller venues were ideal for the couple, as they wanted to be close to the water and enjoyed that their guests could have a relaxing vacation before and after the wedding.
The wedding itself was a festive and preppy celebration of Patrick’s Irish heritage (the groomsmen wore green pants) and Alethea’s Caribbean-Asian background (the table names were Chinese characters). With Alethea’s parents helping with the planning from Houston, TX, the Harney’s relied on the staff at Ocean Edge and Bella’s Blooms of South Yarmouth to assist them through the process. “We chose vendors that truly understood our vision for the day so that if we couldn’t be there to make a decision, we knew we could trust their judgment,” says Alethea.
The couple incorporated the feeling of a Cape summer into the wedding with the bridesmaid’s wearing Coren Moore navy and white seersucker dresses and platinum Jack Rogers sandals, while adding personal twists, including a steel drum musician playing Irish tunes for 185 guests during the cocktail hour.
“The Harney wedding was especially fun to document because it had so many unique details,” says photographer Laura Widness. “The reception really erupted with fun when the bride’s father put on a white glove to dance to a Michael Jackson hit! These gloves, along with various other fun props including hats, glasses and jackets really got the crowd celebrating in style.”
Alethea had the first text message Patrick sent her printed on napkins:“got home safe and sound. totally not thinking about you. Will call after several days. Patrick,” and blooming hydrangeas stood out against the bride’s white roses and the bridesmaids’ vibrant pink.
And one of the new couple’s best memories from that day? Patrick and his three brothers serenading Alethea with their rendition of “My Girl.” At the end of the evening, the newlyweds walked out into a beautiful Cape Cod evening through a tunnel of cheering friends and family holding sparklers.
