When you’re a wedding planner, there must be a lot of pressure when it’s time for your own wedding. “Not really,” says Kate Damore, owner of Kickstand Events, a wedding planning business in Wilmington, North Carolina. Last July, Kate married her college sweetheart, Nick, at the Madison Beach Hotel in her hometown of Madison, Connecticut. She says, “It was actually the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I just told my vendors, ‘Go ahead and do what you need to do.’ ” She knew the key as a bride was to relax and not micromanage the event.
Kate ended up with the perfect day. “As a wedding planner, I don’t use that word often. But it was just such a great day. It felt like we were guests at our own wedding.”
The morning began for the bride and her bridesmaids with yoga on the beach. Kate emphasized comfort above all else. Having watched many clients discard their Manolo Blahnik shoes, she wore comfortable, lacy TOMS, which proved perfect for walking along the beach and climbing on rocks for spectacular photos.
Husband Nick credits Kate with the wedding’s success. He says her attention to detail throughout the process ensured that, when the day arrived, they could simply enjoy it.
One detail that Nick took charge of was orchestrating the couple’s send-off. Kate had originally planned to leave the reception as they said goodbye to guests holding sparklers. “But we had no exit vehicle,” says Nick.
Just a day before the wedding, Nick did indeed secure an exit vehicle: a 1949 Rolls Royce Wraith. “It looked like Batman’s car!” Nick enthuses. “Kate had no idea until she got past the sparklers. She loved it! After a crazy day, it was nice to drive along the shoreline and have a quiet moment to ourselves.
“It was, in fact, the perfect ending to a perfect day.”
