Their friendship lasted from kindergarten through college but it wasn’t until Kara and Ken graduated and were both living in Hoboken, New Jersey, that they became romantically involved. After an equally romantic engagement—Ken proposed to his love during a European getaway in San Sebastián, Spain, overlooking the entirety of the coastal city—the couple set to work preparing for an intimate Rhode Island wedding.
“We’ve come to Newport every summer since we’ve been together and just love the area,” says Kara. During a venue scout, Kara and Ken quickly realized that a larger wedding and larger venue space didn’t truly resonate with their overall vision for their wedding day. After learning that The Chanler at Cliff Walk could accommodate a summer Sunday date in 2014, the couple jumped at the chance.
“We went up on a very rainy weekend in March and decided that, even in the gloomy weather, it [The Chanler] was our spot,” says Kara. “The staff was really lovely to deal with, the food is always amazing and what was most important is that, although it is a higher-end venue, not one person working there is pretentious—they all made us feel really welcome and comfortable. The view is certainly not bad, either!”
After only two-and-a-half months of planning, Kara, a fashion publicist in New York City, was able to pull together a small wedding with big impact. Her bridal style set the tone for a stunning get-together: she wore a simple belted Sarah Janks gown, a neutral Stuart Weitzman sandal, a lush, delicate flower crown and rose gold jewelry to coordinate.
With a guest list of 20—them included—Kara and Ken created a memorable day that focused on its guests and the location and not a big party. Getting their families involved—Ken’s father created the ceremony arbor under which the couple wed (it will be used outside their home some day); his sisters were both ordained and performed the ceremony—was extremely important.
“It was really about creating an experience for everyone, since no one was from the surrounding area and some had never been to Newport before,” says Kara. “We wanted to share all of the things we love about the town while making it really easy for people to travel and enjoy themselves. We also wanted to work with vendors who made us feel comfortable and individual, not just like another couple getting married.
“Planning a wedding can be very stressful, so I think once we made it to the actual weekend we just felt really confident and happy that we had stuck with our plan,” says Kara. “That, and having an amazing husband and gorgeous Newport weather for six full days.”
