You’ve said “yes” and booked your wedding date. Now it’s time to plan the fun stuff, including your engagement photos. While some couples might feel stressed about a prenuptial photoshoot, wedding pros advise it’s worth saying “cheese!” before your big day. We caught up with award-winning Rhode Island wedding photographer Nicole Gesmondi of Nicole Gesmondi Photographer, LLC, to ask why she recommends couples say “I do” to engagement photos with their wedding day photographer.
#1 An engagement session is like a wedding day test run.
“An engagement session is a great icebreaker,” says Gesmondi. “It gives couples an idea of what to expect on the wedding day—like how the photographer works behind a camera and their particular style.” And since not everyone loves having their photos taken (deer in headlights, anyone?) an engagement session is a perfect opportunity for couples to connect with their photographer so they’ll be more comfortable behind the lens on their big day.
#2 You’ll have professional photos of you without your wedding attire on.
While you’ll be swooning over your wedding day photos for years to come, it’s always nice to have casual shots separate from the big day. Gesmondi notes that engagement photos can be used for save-the-dates, for your wedding website or for sign-in books at your wedding, and even as portraits to hang in your home.
#3 They’re fun!
Engagement sessions aren’t meant to be stressful—in fact, they should be one of the most fun parts of your wedding planning! Couples can (and should) get creative with their pre-wedding photoshoot. After all, it’s all about you! Dress up or down, have a theme, include a pet, celebrate a favorite sports team, or take photos at “your favorite spot.” For ladies, an engagement session is also a good time to test out your wedding day hair and/or makeup.
