Ok, I have an enormous confession to make: as a wedding editor and ardent fashion follower, I bow down before the tulle, beading, lace and layers of wedding dresses of the couture gown persuasion. However, when I think about what I would want to wear when I get married, I just can’t really picture myself in a fancy gown.
It isn’t just that wearing fitted, tailored clothing makes me squirm (my dressing room motto is “if I can’t take a nap in it, I probably won’t wear it”); I just don’t feel very at home in uber-feminine fashion, and I actually feel more beautiful as a woman when I’m dressed in a mish-mash of his and hers pieces, and wearing slim to no makeup.
Part of what makes my job so fun is that I get to live vicariously through other brides whose style differs so much from my own. Nothing makes my day like a real wedding landing on my desk filled with pictures of a bride totally at peace- happy, radiant, and simply herself – in her wedding dress.
I’ve had a lot of talks with friends who feel similarly to me- “they’re so pretty, but they’re not for me.” So you know what? When my time comes, I think I’ll skimp on the threads and splurge on grub and tunes, because I really like to eat and I really really like to dance to live music.
Which brings me to Zara, that elusively cool Spanish house of sartorial wonder. Zara is so sought after by the fashion set that they don’t even have to advertise; it’s all word of mouth and incredible, unsolicited exposure. Just check out any major street style or fashion blog and you’ll find Zara pieces mixed in with, and holding their own against, all the biggest names in high fashion.
Here’s a roundup of 10 wedding-ready dresses that range from sleek and modern to romantic, bohemian and downright non-traditional. (Check the “something blue” box with a maxi dress in a pale blue stripe!). And since I flock to the color peach like a bee to honey, I threw in my own take at mismatched bridesmaids dresses. The best part? All of them are under $100!
